Snowshoeing Dolomites
Val Gardena to Val di Funes
I started my journey by bus early in the morning from Tirol Hotel in St Maddalena Val di Funes. At the bottom of the valley in Chiusa, I change buses to line 350 toward Val Gardena. I exited the bus in Central Ortisei and walked 100 meters to the cog train station (Funicular Resciesa). The Funicular Resciesa took me to 2,200 meters where I strap on my snowshoes for a 6 hour hike to my staring point in St Maddalena Val di Funes approximately 15.3 kilometers in distance away. The Rasciesa Mountain and Innerraschötz mountain ridge separates Val Gardena and Val di Funes. This hike is mostly above the tree line with traverses through small patches of pinion pine forest. I cheated as after a wonderful dinner at Geisler Alm, I rented a 5 euro one person sled for an exhilarating ride down a winding mountain forest road for the remaining 4.5 kilometers to the Ranui Farm in St Maddalena.

Best route is to follow signs at the upper Funicular Resciesa station to the Flitzer Scharte on trail 31, then on trail # 35 (Adolf Munkel Weg) in an easterly direction on the Innerraschötz ridgeline toward the Brogles Sattel. From Brogles Sattel to Brogles Alm then toward Gschnagenhardt and Geisler Alms. The high point on the hike is 2306 meters on the Innerraschötz ridgeline with the Geisler Alm at 2000 meters. The majority of the trek is between 2000 and 2300 meters.
Notes: This hike would be extremely difficult to dangerous after a fresh deep soft snowfall. Bring food for midday as after leaving Funicular Resciesa upper station there are no open huts until reaching the Geisler Alm.
